Bothered by Stubborn Red Acne marks?

What is Post Inflammatory Erythema (PIE)?

Red acne marks/scars otherwise known as post-inflammatory erythema (PIE) can be stubborn and often a source of frustration. Even with no treatment, PIE marks eventually fade. However, the process is slow and can take several months to a year.

What causes PIE?

PIE develops due to damage and dilation of small blood vessels (capillaries) near the surface of the skin.

It is commonly caused by

  • Inflamed acne
  • Incorrectly “popping” or picking of pimples
  • Trauma to the skin such as scraps or scratches
  • Chemical / laser burns
  • Sunburn

Simple test for PIE

Apply pressure to the red marks and if they temporarily disappear, it is most likely PIE.

How can we treat PIE?

Vascular lasers like the Pro-yellow laser or Spectra XT “Gold-Toning” 595 nm laser can effectively treat PIE by targeting hemoglobin through the process of selective photothermolysis.

The lasers safely penetrate skin to break down and disperse damaged blood vessels, thereby reducing the appearance of PIE.

PICOsecond Gold Toning Laser

The picosecond gold toning laser uses the 595nm wavelength to target redness such as red acne marks / scars (post inflammatory erythema) and rosacea.

It works by destroying the hemoglobin (red colour causing pigment) in the blood vessels which have accumulated in these areas. These blood vessels are the cause of facial redness.

The gold toning laser is non ablative and hence, does not burn or remove the outer layer of skin. As such, there is minimal to no downtime. There may be slight redness after laser which lasts for a few hours.

There is no need for numbing cream as discomfort is mild. Most patients will experience a warm or hot sensation over the lasered area.
