What is Subcision?
Subcision is a procedure that releases the fibrous bands/tethers that are the main culprits in causing depressed acne scar formation in the skin.
These fibrotic tissues/bands/tethers are formed during the inflammatory acne process and are left behind after the healing phase.
Deep acne scars form due to a combination of loss of collagen and formation of such tethers that physically “pull” the surface of the skin downwards, leading to a skin depression. Subcision breaks apart these fibrous bands/tethers, releasing tethered scars and improving their appearance.
It is highly recommended to follow up with subsequent procedures such as eCO2 laser and Rejuran Scar to stimulate collagen for even better results.
What type of scars can be treated with Subcision?
Subcision is able to treat almost all types of scars. Here are some of the types of scars that can be treated successfully with subcision.

Treatment Experience
After a thorough cleansing, a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area in order to reduce discomfort and pain.
Next, a tiny needle is inserted into the area with the depressed scar.
Dr Edwin will move the needle in a “fanning” fashion to release these fibrous tissues and tethers. Patients may feel a “clicking” sensation during this process.
After subcision, mild bruising and swelling may occur, lasting around 5 to 7 days.
Applying the intensive recovery cream will hasten recovery and shorten the downtime.
Subcision is a safe procedure and side effects / risks are minimal.
For deep/severe scarring, 2 to 3 sessions of subcision may be needed to completely clear the fibrotic tethers.
Dr Edwin prefers to combine Subcision with treatments that stimulate collagen for best results.
Subcision and Rejuran Scar Treatment
Once the tethers are released after Subcision, Dr Edwin may opt to perform the Rejuran Scar treatment concurrently where Rejuran Scar (PDRN) is injected into the scar tissue to stimulate collagen growth. Another benefit of performing the Rejuran Scar treatment immediately after subcision is that it “fills” and “stretches” the space surrounding the depressed scar to prevent fibrotic tethers from reforming.

Subcision and Fractional Laser
After subcision, fractional lasers can be used to stimulate collagen for further improvement of acne scars.

Subcision and Fillers
