Pigmentation Laser Treatment

What lasers are used?

Depending on the type of pigmentation, skin type and condition, Dr Edwin will select between the Spectra Pigmentation Laser or Pro-Yellow Laser.

Dr Edwin finds the Spectra Pigmentation Laser more ideal for freckles, lentigines and sun spots while the Pro-Yellow Laser is more effective in treating melasma.

The eCO2 laser is recommended for removal of bumps like Sebhorrhoeic Keratoses (painless brown growths),

Why Spectra Q-switched Nd-Yag Pigmentation Laser?

The Spectra Pigmentation Laser is a powerful and versatile FDA approved Nd: Yag laser that is clinically proven to treat a wide variety of conditions such as:

  • Freckles
  • Sunspots, Agespots
  • Melasma
  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Tattoo Removal
  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Skin brightening

How does it work?

This non-invasive treatment utilizes advanced laser technology to target melanin (pigments) in the cells. Illustrated in the picture below, these pigmentation are shattered into smaller pieces which are then cleared by the body’s natural removal process - resulting in improvement of pigmentation.

In addition to reducing pigments, the Spectra Laser also brightens skin and treats uneven skin tone. Skin tone and colour is determined by the number of pigment cells. By reducing the number of pigment cells through laser, the skin will enjoy a brightening effect and lighter tone.

Treatment Experience

Patients can expect a very mild ant-bite like sensation during the laser. The cold air blower will be used concurrently to reduce discomfort and skin redness. Overall, the laser is comfortable and definitely not classified as painful!

The treatment duration is approximately 15 minutes and there is no downtime for the Spectra 1064nm laser. Some patients may experienced mild redness lasting 4 to 6 hours. We recommend applying the intensive recovery cream for optimal results.

Dr Edwin may recommend the stronger "burn off" spectra 660nm laser for stubborn pigmentation. However, there will be scabbing and hence downtime of between 3 to 7 days after the treatment.

How about Melasma?

Dr Edwin finds that treatment of melasma can be difficult in some cases and is associated with high rates of recurrence because of the following factors which may worsen melasma.

  • Hormonal medications such as birth control pills
  • Sun exposure
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetic Predisposition

Dr Edwin has created an intensive Melasma treatment regime that combines oral TA, specially formulated skincare products and creams as well as laser combination treatment.

How does the Pro-Yellow laser help Melasma?

The Pro Yellow laser lightens Melasma by removing excess pigmentation.

More importantly, by targeting blood vessels supplying the pigment cells, the Pro Yellow laser improves longevity of results by suppressing pigment formation and lowering the risk of melasma recurrence.

Treatment Experience

Most patients will experience warmth on their skin during the procedure. This laser is not painful at all!

The cold air blower will be used concurrently to reduce discomfort and skin redness. In fact, most of the time, patients will only feel the cold air.

Treatment duration is approximately 15 minutes. More obvious and significant results are usually seen after 5 to 10 sessions.

There is ZERO downtime and skin redness is minimal. Dr Edwin recommends a treatment interval is once every 2 to 4 weeks.
